Spiritual Direction

Spiritual Direction is the practice of being with people as they attempt to deepen their relationship with the Divine, or to learn and grow in their personal spirituality. Liz seeks to create safe and sacred spaces for individuals and groups to reflect on their own lives, awaken to the beauty of God's creation, become more aware of the presence of the Divine, and live from their truest identity as beloved. While rooted in the Christian tradition, Liz welcomes all who seek to explore (or even to question) God's love.

In a Spiritual Direction session, the person seeking direction (we call this the person the directee) shares stories of their encounters of the Divine, or how they are cultivating a life attuned to spiritual things. As your companion in the journey, Liz will listen and ask questions to assist the directee in his or her process of reflection and spiritual growth.

Before we begin a Spiritual Direction relationship, it is necessary to have a 30-minute Introductory Session where we will get to know each other, set expectations, and make sure this is a good fit!

"To listen another's soul into a condition of disclosure and discovery may be almost the greatest service that any human being ever performs for another."

FAQs

What is Spiritual Direction?

Paula D’Arcy expresses that “God appears to us, hidden within our daily experiences,” and Spiritual Direction can assist us in recognizing God’s presence and activity in our routine lives. Spiritual Direction involves walking alongside someone, offering intentional and sacred listening to uncover the presence of God in their personal journey.

Where and when would we meet?

The basic rhythm is once a month for an hour—this is intended to be a pilgrimage, not a sprint! There may be seasons when it makes sense to meet less frequently or ocassionally even more frequently for a short time.

We can meet in person in Milwaukee, over the phone, or online via Zoom—you will have an option to select when you set up your session. Most directees choose Zoom, as it provides the most flexibility for those who are not in the Milwaukee area!

What happens during a Spiritual Direction session?

Sessions last for one hour. Each session starts with a moment of silence and centering, often accompanied by a short opening prayer or reading. When you feel ready, you’ll begin by reflecting on your recent experiences: any themes, challenges, interactions, or thoughts you wish to delve into as you seek to understand how the Spirit might be guiding you. Liz may ask questions to encourage deeper reflection, suggest an image or metaphor for consideration, or share her insights on what she’s hearing or noticing. The session usually concludes with a moment of silence and a brief prayer. As you build your relationship with Liz, you both will discover what approaches resonate best with you.

How much does it cost?

Liz acknowledges that resources are distributed unevenly, with some people having more and others less. To address this, she provides a three-tiered structure, allowing individuals to choose what fits their budget.

  • Standard Rate: $85

  • Supported Rate: $60

  • Supporting Rate: $100

Support from individuals with a bit of extra financial flexibility creates greater access for those who might find Spiritual Direction otherwise unattainable. Financial constraints shouldn’t hinder anyone from exploring Spiritual Direction; feel free to reach out to Liz for a chat if this is something on your mind.

Payment is expected at the time services are booked and can be made via Venmo or any other digital form of payment. If you must cancel your appointment please do so at least 24 hours in advance via email. You will be billed a fee of $85 for any appointment that is missed or cancelled without 24-hour notification.

Note: Charges for Individualized Personality Profiles (see Enneagram page) or other services are made separately.

Why would someone see a Spiritual Director?

If someone is looking to deepen their relationship with God, they might find it challenging to see the broader perspective of their lives due to the daily hustle and stress. The saying “you can’t see the forest for the trees” perfectly captures this struggle. Spiritual direction offers a chance to take a step back and thoughtfully consider your life and the presence of the Divine as your personal journey unfolds.

There are various reasons someone might seek spiritual direction, such as going through a period of discernment, wanting to enhance self-awareness, seeking a richer prayer experience, grappling with faith-related questions, feeling hurt or disillusioned by the church but still wanting to explore personal beliefs, or dealing with identity issues and understanding how God perceives you.

Who will know what I say in a Spiritual Direction session?

It's important to understand that there are specific legal situations where Liz might be obligated to disclose information to a third party. If you have any questions about confidentiality, feel free to reach out. You are also free to discontinue Spiritual Direction whenever you choose.
